Bees Narrowly Defeated 4-3

Saturday saw the Bees venture out towards Wigan to face Golborne Mens 2nds away. Putting the player shortages of the last few weeks behind them the Bees were keen to enter the fray.

It was Golborne who seized the advantage and scored first. But the Bees were quick to draw even after Richard Greenhough scored off a short corner, thanks to an assist from Damien Sean Smith.

Golborne counter attacked strongly and in the midst of their forward press against some very stiff Bees resistance, Ashley Critten was felled by a Golborne elbow to the head. Despite this, no penalty was forthcoming and the first half ended with the scores tied with one goal apiece.

A mere twenty eight seconds into the second half, Damien Sean Smith made a superb run and went for the net with a reverse side shot. Sadly the shot did not find the mark but Ant Rigby was on hand to slam the goal home and secure the Bees second goal. Golborne did not give up however and soon drew the scores level following a short corner.

Gareth Hampton scored the third goal of the game for the Bees, dancing his way through four defenders before drawing the keeper into a rash challenge and slipping it past him and into the net. Another short corner saw Golborne draw level once more, then they managed another goal from open play so when the final whistle blew, the Bees had narrowly lost out with three goals to four.

Special mentions go to Oscar Bedford and Mark Armistead for a pair of very impressive debuts, as well as to Damien Sean Smith for managing to assist in all three Bees goals in one way or another.

Gareth Hampton was narrowly beaten to the honours of Man of the Match by Thomas Ainsley, both of whom displayed a great deal of consistent effort and skill over the course of what was a very close game.
